The Wallbox Pulsar Plus has to be our favorite amongst all the 9.6 kW chargers here and we’ll explain why. First of all let’s look at the technicals because this 40 Amp electric vehicle charging station will work on a 240V outlet and is compatible with the NEMA 14-50 connector but it can also be hardwired to a 48 AMP circuit. Don’t forget, you need to plug it into a circuit that’s about 20% more powerful for it to work at peak charging power. An advantage is that it is adjustable, so you can “choose the amps” all the way from 16 Amps to 40 Amps.

So what do all these numbers actually mean? In reality, a Tesla Model Y with the 75 kWh battery pack will charge in about 8-9 hours, while a Long Range Tesla Model 3 or a Ford Mustang Mach E with the 70 kWh battery pack will take about 7-8.

The cable on this AC Charging station is 25 feet long (About 7.6 meters) and it can plug into an SAE J1772 connector on the car. This type of connector is used for all electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids in North America.

The WallBox Pulsar Plus’ main advantage is the fact that it has WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity. This allows you to remotely connect to it and control it via a the Wallbox smartphone app. You can also control it with your voice because it integrates seamlessly with Amazon Alexa and Google Home. The main advantage of the app is that you can create more complex charging schedules and the reporting feature which helps you keep track of electric energy costs.

The smartphone app is the only form of intelligent interaction that you can have with the device because the design is purely minimalistic, no LCD display or buttons mounted.

Wallbox offers a 3-Year warranty for this home charge station and its enclosure is IP54 rated. While it works indoors and outdoors, the IP67 rating that the Grizzl-E offers is much better suited. We’ll talk about it below.

The Grizzl-E is our second 9.6 kW Charger which we’ll be looking at today. It is also a home EV charging station that you’ll be mounting on the wall of your garage, but with a different approach.

It has the same charging rate of 9.6 kW so the charging time will be the same as with the Wallbox Pulsar Plus, provided you link it to a 48 Amp circuit. It can plug into a NEMA 14-50 or a NEMA 6-50 outlet operating at a voltage between 208V and 240V, plus you also have the option to hardwire it should you wish to do so. The cable extending from the charger is 24 feet long, which is about 7.3 meters and can’t be disconnected or replaced, bear in mind that this is the case with all the EV Chargers listed here. The holster is separate from the charger so you can mount it anywhere in your garage. Some people like their holster integrated some don’t, you do you.

The Grizzl-E Classic takes a different approach in terms of smart features as in it does not have any. No WiFi connectivity, no smartphone app or Alexa integration. However Grizzl-E also offers the Smart version should you be interested in having these features. Interestingly it doesn’t even have an LCD display to show information.

The enclosure is IP67 rated so it is highly durable, waterproof and dustproof. On top of that, the manufacturer will offer you a 3-Year warranty. It is UL Certified so it has a better chance of being eligible for a rebate in your area, you can find it in 2 color schemes, there’s the classic and extreme edition with totally unnecessary camouflage.

The Mustart Level 2 Portable 40 AMP unit is our third 9.6 kW EV Charger that we’ll be reviewing.

Unlike the first two, this is a portable electric vehicle charger so you don’t need to worry about having to mount it on the wall, you just carry it around in your car and use it wherever you can. It will plug into a NEMA 14-50 or a NEMA 6-50 socket at a 240V voltage. They’re sold as 2 different products on Amazon so you’ll need to pay attention when you purchase.

It too has a charging power of 9.6 kW which puts it on par with the other 3 in terms of charging times. The cable is long enough measuring the standard 25 feet (7.6 meters) that you would get with most devices especially in this price range.

It doesn’t have any kind of WiFi connection or smartphone app integration and the truth is you will rarely if ever have these features on a cheaper portable charging station.

What is nice is that the manufacturer has managed to mount an LCD Display which shows you some key pieces of information such as the charging speed, the progress of the charging process, amperage, voltage, power and a timer showing for how long has your EV been charging.

The control box is IP65 rated and the connector is rated at IP67, something which we believe is important for portable chargers since they will almost always be more exposed to bad weather, splashes while also being dropped or hit. Mustart offers a 3-Year warranty for this device.

The Portable LEFANEV Level 2 40-Amp is the last 9.6 kW Charger that made our shortlist. This too is a portable electric car charger, the differences being that for the LEFANEV there’s only one version with a NEMA 14-50 connector. It runs at a voltage between 220V and 240V with a measured charging power of 9.6 kW.

It too has an LCD Display which provides you critical info on the charging rate, Amperage, temperature of the unit and a timer. No Wifi or Smartphone connectivity. The outer housing is IP66 rated and the cable measures 25 feet.

Pricewise it is very similarly priced with the MUSTART, so at the end of the day it might just come down to personal preference between these two. In terms of customer satisfaction we would be inclined to point to the Mustart as the slightly superior product.
