Morec – Level 2 Portable EV Charger (32 Amp) Charging specifications
The Morec EV Charger comes in many versions, however today we’ll be looking at the Level 2 models which are portable. We’ve selected the base 16 Amp model (Which is adjustable and can work as a Level 1 & 2 charger), a 32 Amp model which is featured here and a 40 Amp version, the most powerful one.
First of all, let’s look at the 16-Amp Morec charger. This one can work on 110V and on 240V outlets. Just as a reminder, any outlet up to 120V will limit it to a Level 1 portable electric charger. Beyond that, it will work as a Level 2 charger. It has a charging rate of 3.84 kW, but what does that mean in reality? How long does it take to charge your car? It will take 13 hours to charge either a Tesla Model 3 Standard, a VW ID.3 Pure or ID.4 Pure or a Renault Zoe. It takes 18.5 hours to charge the Long Range Tesla Model 3 and also a 70 kWh Mustang Mach E. A Hyundai Kona and a Kia Niro both take 17 hours to charge. Now be advised that these are the numbers for when the charger is running at 3.8 kW (Level 2).
Then there is the 32-Amp Morec EV Charger. It only works at 220V-240V and it has a charging rate of 7.68 kW which changes everything. All of a sudden, the standard Tesla Model 3 will charge in 6.5 hours along with the VW ID.3 Pure and ID.4 Pure and Renaul Zoe. The Tesla Model Y, ID.3 Pro and ID.4 Pro will now charge in just 9.5 hours. The Mustang Mach E will take just 9 hours and so will the Hyundai Kona and Kia Niro.
But what if even that is not fast enough and you want more miles of range per hour? Then you should try the 40-Amp charger which runs at 8.8 kW. That will shave off another 30 to 60 minutes out of most of these charging times.
Morec – Level 2 Portable EV Charger (32 Amp) Cable types and connectors
The Morec EV Charger has a very long EV Charging Cable that measures 26 Feet (7.9 Meters). This is a bit longer than the average of 25 feet that you’ll find on most chargers in this price range and a welcome bonus, since you can plug it into your car, even if it is parked outside of your garage. The cable is tethered to the charger, so you can’t just disconnect it and replace it with a longer one, you need to buy an extension cord like this one if you need one.
The 16-Amp model plugs into a NEMA 6-20 wall socket, the 32-Amp model plugs into either a NEMA 14-50 or a NEMA 6-50 socket and the 40-Amp version comes with a NEMA 14-50 wall connector. At the other end, all 3 versions use the SAE J1772 charge port to connect to the car. This port is universal for electric cars made for the North American market.
Morec – Level 2 Portable EV Charger (32 Amp) Features
Neither of the 3 versions of the Morec EV Charger are smart chargers, so there is no kind of connectivity to your smartphone and no integration with Google Home or Amazon Echo.
There is no scheduled charging feature, so as an EV owner you need to rely on your car to have this feature. The idea with this is that you set a timer for the car to start charging late at night when it uses off-peak electricity which will reduce your charging cost. It can make quite a big difference on your electric energy bill.
The 16-Amp model only has a few LED lights to display critical info, whether it is powered on, charging or if there is a fault. However the more powerful versions come with an LCD Display that shows you the Amperage, charging level, how long it has been running and supplying power to your EV or Plug-In Hybrid, the Voltage and temperature of the unit. It also displays the amount of kWh that has been supplied from the electric vehicle charger to the car.
In terms of durability and toughness, the 16-Amp is IP65 rated while the 32-Amp and the 40-Amp chargers are IP66 rated. This means that it will be waterproof and dustproof, it is dust tight and can sustain water from heavy seas and powerful jets.
