The first 6 kW charger that we’ll be reviewing is the Mustart Level 2 Portable EV Charger (26 Amp). This is a 6.24 kW charger so you can expect a Tesla Model 3 to charge in somewhere between 7 to 9 hours. A Model Y should take between 10-12 hours, a Hyundai Kona or a Kia Niro should charge in 9-11 hours. These are reasonably fast charging times for charging an electric car at home.

The cable is tethered to this 26 Amp Electric Vehicle charger as it is the case with all the chargers listed here and in North America and it comes with a 25-feet long (7.6 meters) EV Charging Cable. The wall socket in which you can plug it into should be a NEMA 10-30 at a 240V Voltage. The other end of the cable that connects to the car’s charge port is an SAE J1772 standard plug.

It’s not a smart charger and it doesn’t have special features, the amperage is not adjustable and you can’t set a schedule for charging, however you should be able to do that directly from your EV. It does have an LCD display that shows you some key information like charging speed, the AC charger level, charging time for that specific session, the temperature of the unit and the amperage.

The unit has a tough and solid enclosure because it is IP65 rated, meaning it will withstand water and dirt without any problems. Mustart will offer you a 2-Year No-Hassle warranty which is one year more than what you would get with the other two. Because this is a portable device, you don’t need the electric car charger installed in your garage, you can just carry it around with you.

The second 6 kW EV Charger that we’ll be looking at is the PRIMECOM Level 2 Portable EV Charger (32 Amp). This one has a 6.7 kW charging power, so slightly more, but you can basically use the same charging times that we provided for the Mustart as a guide. You can get this with either a 30, 40 or 50-foot cable. None of the other chargers provide even close to that so if a long cable is critical for you, then you should be looking at this one.

It can plug into either a NEMA 14-50, NEMA 10-50 or a NEMA 6-50 3-pin wall socket at a 220V Voltage. Even though it is not a smart EV charger, it does surprisingly have a charge timer. There’s a button on the home charger which you can press to delay the charging, so that you can take advantage of off-peak electricity to reduce your charging cost.

It too has an LCD Display that will show you the amperage, voltage, a charging timer, the charging level and the temperature of the unit.

The enclosure is IP56 rated, which means that when compared to
the Mustart which is IP65 rated, we can tell that the PRIMECOM can deal better with water while the Mustart can deal better with dust and dirt. This device is offered together with a 1-Year No-Hassle warranty.

The PRIMECOM is in our opinion, too expensive unless you really need the longer cable. At this price we would most certainly go for the high-performance electric vehicle charge stations from ChargePoint or the home Wallbox Charger.

Then there is the SplitVolt Level 2 Portable EV Charger (24 Amp), our last 6 kW EV Charger. This one has a charging power rated at 5.8 kW when it is plugged into a 240V outlet. It is compatible with NEMA 10-30 and NEMA 14-30 wall sockets and uses the same J1772 charging connector. It is also a tethered EV Charger, so the cable can’t be disconnected from the control box and replaced and here it might be a bit of a problem because this portable charger has a cable which is only 16.4 feet long.

No connectivity, no charge scheduling, this is not a smart charger and unlike the other two units this doesn’t have an LCD screen to display critical info. It is IP55 rated which means it will withstand splashes and dirt well and the unit comes with a 1-Year No-Hassle warranty.

Given that this home EV charger almost the same price as the Mustart, we would go for the Mustart charger by all means.
