Let’s have a look at each product in particular.

Mustart – Level 2 Portable EV Charger (26 Amp)

I have to admit that the Mustart just keeps popping up in our lists, probably because it is such a good charger. This is our first NEMA 14-30 EV Charger. You can plug it into either a NEMA 10-30 or a standard household NEMA 14-30 outlet and the other end of the 25 feet cable that is connected to it will plug into the EV’s J1772 plug. The SAE J1772 connector is universal for all EVs in the US except for Tesla Models, but they do come with adapters.

In order to take full advantage of the 26 amp circuit charging, you need to connect it to the 30 Amp outlet. The Mustart can output 6.24 kW of charging power at a 240V voltage which means that for example a standard Tesla Model 3 should charge in somewhere between 7 to 9 hours, a Model Y should take between 10-12 hours, a Hyundai Kona or a Kia Niro would charge in about 9.5 to 11 hours, a 40 kWh Nissan Leaf should charge in about 6.5 hours and the standard Mustang Mach E should take about 10-12 hours.

The Mustart doesn’t have any spectacular features, there’s no wifi connectivity, smartphone app or Amazon Alexa integration. This means it can’t do charge scheduling so you’ll need to rely on your car to do that. To be fair, most of the portable EV Chargers lack these functions and those which have it usually have it in the form of a delay timer which doesn’t have the full functionality.

However it does have a very useful LCD screen which will display the amperage, voltage, unit temperature, a timer which tells you for how long the car has been charging but also how many kWh of power have been used in that specific session.



This portable EV charging station is IP65 rated which means it will be waterproof and dustproof and the unit comes with a 2-Year No-Hassle warranty from the manufacturer.

PRIMECOM – Level 2 Portable EV Charger (16 Amp)

Then there is our second NEMA 14-30 EV Charger, the PRIMECOM Level 2 Portable EV Charger (16 Amp model). This one we know very well for its flexibility because it comes with more plug options than the national electric code (NEC) can count: NEMA 14-30, 10-30, 14-50, 6-20, 6-50 and 10-50.

You can also choose how long you want the cable to be, 30 ft (9.1 meters) or 50 ft (15.2 meters). Now you need to know that even the shorter option is still longer than most of the EV chargers on the market.

This is a 3.84 kW charger, so it is going to take quite a bit longer than it would with the 6.24 kW one. For example, that same standard Model 3 would take about 13 hours, the Model Y would take up to 20 hours, the Hyundai Kona and Kia Niro should charge in 17 hours, the 40 kWh Leaf would take 10-11 hours and the base model Mustang Mach E would charge in about 19 hours. Again, these are just estimations so take them more as a rough approximation.

In terms of smart features, it is also lacking here without any connectivity or smartphone integration, but at least it does pack and LCD Display in order to display critical information, basically what you get with the Mustart you also get with this one, things like charging rate and charging status.

The IP Rating is IP55 which means it’s mostly the same with a slightly higher rating for resistance to dust and dirt because remember, the first digit from the IP Rating is resistance to solids and the second represents resistance to water. The device comes with a 1-Year No-Hassle warranty.

SplitVolt – Level 2 Portable EV Charger (24 Amp)

The final NEMA 14-30 EV Charger we’ll be looking at is this SplitVolt Level 2 Portable charger, the 24-Amp version. This one plugs into either a NEMA 10-30 or a NEMA 14-30 outlet.

If you need to mount a 240V NEMA 10-30 outlet in your garage, Splitvolt chargers are designed to be perfectly compatible with the SplitVolt Splitter switches because both products are made and distributed by Splitvolt Inc. The idea with them is that they split the 10-30 outlet into a 30 amp dryer plug and a 30 amp EV plug.

It can output 6.6 kW of power so it will post the same charging times as the Mustart. The bigger problem with this unit is the fact that the cable is a bit too short measuring 16.4 ft (4.9 meters). Now in case you want this charger and need a longer cable, you can just get an additional extension cord.

While there are no smart features, there is no LCD display either because the charger makes use of 4 LED lights, one to tell you if it is powered on, one that tells if it is charging the car and two to handle faults.

The charger is IP55 rated meaning it is ok to use it indoors and outdoors while it comes with a 1-Year No-Hassle warranty. It is also the lightest home charger here by quite a difference weighing just 7.7 lbs (3.5 kg).
