ENEL X JuiceBox 40 – Level 2 EV Charging Station (40 Amp) Charging specifications

This has to be one of the most successful EV chargers ever made. It comes in two versions, a 32-amp model and a 40-amp model.

The ENEL X JuiceBox 32 is the base model with a charging rate of 7.7 kW at a 240V Voltage. Here are some estimates as to how quick it will charge: A Tesla Model 3 should charge in somewhere between 6 to 7 hours and the same can be said for the VW ID.3 Pure and ID.4 Pure which have a 45 respectively 50 kWh battery pack and also the Renault Zoe with a 52 kWh battery. Then there is the other group consisting of the Hyundai Kona, Kia Niro and the Mustang Mach E which have battery packs from 64 to 70 kWh and there you can expect charging times between 8.5 to 9.5 hours. If you are the EV owner of a Tesla Model Y with a 75 kWh battery pack, it should charge your car in 9-10 hours.

Then there is the ENEL X JuiceBox 40 which has a 10 kW charging rate at 240V. This time, the same Model Y takes only about 8-9 hours while the Mustang Mach E should take about 7-8 hours. This is because they can take advantage of the higher charging power of the JuiceBox 40. This is not applicable to all electric cars and you first need to make sure that your car can charge at this rate, because more than 50% of cars cannot charge at a 10 kW rate.

ENEL X JuiceBox 40 – Level 2 EV Charging Station (40 Amp) Cable types and connectors

Now let’s look at the EV Charging Cable length which is 25 feet (About 7.6 meters). The cable is long enough to stretch out even in front of your garage if needed, let’s say you have two cars and one is parked in the driveway, you can bring the charger to it. If it’s not long enough, you can always just get an extension cord.

What is nice about the JuiceBox is that both versions of the charger can plug into a NEMA 14-50 wall socket, you don’t need to necessarily hardwire it. The end of the cable that plugs into your plug-in hybrid’s charge port uses an SAE J1772 connector which is universal to all EVs in North America with the famous exception of Tesla cars which provide an adapter, so it works everywhere.

To have the JuiceBox 32 run at its full capacity of 32 Amps you will need to plug it to a 40-Amp circuit and for the JuiceBox 40 you’ll need to plug it to a 48-Amp circuit. It can do power sharing, which means if you plug two JuiceBox chargers on the same circuit, they can connect with eachother and share the electric energy that comes from it in a smarter way. With more and more EVs being sold, it is more likely that the typical household might have more than one electric car.

The unit has an automatic restart function, so if the power goes out it will automatically restart and reinitiate the current charging session.

The unit comes with a nice connector holster mounted on it, this is a different direction from the old Juicebox charger. Remember that the start-up company that made the first juicebox was called eMotorwerks and was bought by the Italian energy company Enel and thus this unit represents the second generation of this device.

It is really easy to have the charger installed, it comes with a bracket that you mount on the wall and then the charger just slides into place on it, a very elegant solution. There’s also a locking system so that people can’t steal your charger from the wall.

ENEL X JuiceBox 40 – Level 2 EV Charging Station (40 Amp) Features

The Enel X Juicebox is a smart charger because it comes with a host of intelligent features. First of all, there is the WiFi connectivity which lets you connect to it via your smartphone through the JuiceNet app that is available on the App Store and on Google Play.

The app has a sleek design that shows you the charging level, how many miles of range have been added to your car in that particular session along with electrical info such as Current, Voltage, Power, Frequency, kWh added in the current session and how long it took. There’s also a nice feature which shows you CO2 savings so you can feel better about yourself that day. Every charging session is stored into a log which you can consult.

Of course, one of the critical functions that is present in the app is the scheduled charging feature which lets you set the charging hours and the reason you would want to use that is to take advantage of off-peak electricity and reduce your charging costs.

Along with those features, it also has full Amazon Alexa and Google Home integration, so you can remotely start it or stop it just by using your voice.

There is no LCD Display on the unit and no kind of interface or buttons because everything is done from the smartphone and the design of the unit is my favorite amongst more than 50 different EV Chargers.

The enclosure of this electric vehicle charging station is NEMA 4X rated which would be the equivalent of IP66. This means that it is highly durable and strong, you can splash it with water and it will still work. It can also withstand large amounts of dirt and dust.

Probably the only disadvantage of this compact home charger is the fact that the cable hoster is a bit fiddly compared to the ChargePoint.

Regardless of which JuiceBox you buy, you will get a 3-Year Limited Warranty from Enel.
