Grizzl-E Classic Charger – Level 2 EV Charging Station (16-40 Amp) Charging specifications
The Grizzl-E Classic Charger works at an amperage between 16 and 40 Amps (You can adjust the amperage on this device) and can be plugged into 208V – 240V outlets.
It has a charging rate of 9.6 kW, but that’s just a number. What you are really interested in knowing is how long it will take to charge your car. Here are some estimates for this one: A standard Tesla Model 3 will charge in 6.5 hours while the Long Range version of the car will take 7.5.
If you are the EV owner of a Tesla Model Y which has a large battery pack, you’ll be happy to know it takes just 8 hours to charge it. Then there are the Volkswagen ID.3 Pure and ID.4 Pure which also charge in 6.5 hours while their respective Pro models take 8 hours. A Renault Zoe would fully charge in 6.5 hours and the Hyundai Kona or Kia Niro would take 9 hours. The standard Mustang Mach E can be fully charged in just 7.5 hours.
You can expect the Grizzl-E Classic charger to add 25 to 30 miles of range per hour of charge.
DISCLAIMER: These are estimations, not official data and should be interpreted as such.
Grizzl-E Classic Charger – Level 2 EV Charging Station (16-40 Amp) Cable types and connectors
The cable from the Grizzl-E charger measures 24 feet (7.3 meters) so this means you can easily charge your car even if it is parked outside of your garage where you have the charger installed. The cable itself is tethered to the charger and so it can’t be disconnected and replaced for another, however if it can’t reach your car you can always buy an extension cord like this one.
In terms of the wall connector, you need to know that you can plug this into a NEMA 14-50 ( or a NEMA 6-50 wall socket, while the other end that plugs into your electric car’s charge port is a standard J1772 connector which is universal for North American EVs. If you don’t have a 14-50 outlet and want to install one, this one from SplitVolt seems to be a favorite among EV owners. The Grizzl-E can also be directly hardwired if you want.
Grizzl-E Classic Charger – Level 2 EV Charging Station (16-40 Amp) Features
In terms of connectivity, the Grizzl-E Classic doesn’t have any kind of wifi or bluetooth connectivity, nor does it even have an LCD display to get some readings on critical info. You can’t set a charge timer either, so that you can take advantage of off-peak electricity and reduce the charging cost on your electric energy bill. However, luckily most new electric vehicles come with this scheduled charging feature, so you can set it up either from the dashboard or from your smartphone app.
However, now there is the Grizzl-E Smart Charger which has connectivity and is OCPP compliant. This means that you’re not limited to the proprietary smartphone app, you can use hundreds of apps that are out there and use this protocol.
The charger is IP67 rated which is probably the best IP rating that we’ve found so far in an EV Charger. At this point, it can literally be immersed in water and it will still continue to work after that, not to mention the fact that it will withstand a lot of dust and dirt before it gives in.
Something which you don’t find in the Electric Vehicle Charger space is that it comes in 2 color combos, the classic and the extreme edition which has a camouflage style design. What is nice is that the connector holster can be mounted not only on the unit itself, but anywhere on the wall where you choose and the system makes it so much easier to holster the connector, you don’t have to insert it with high precision.
It is good to know that it is UL Certified and thus it is eligible for the federal rebate program. Also, the manufacturer offers a 3-Year warranty on the unit, which is much longer than what you get from chargers that are similarly priced.
