Let’s have a look at each product in particular.
MEGEAR – Level 1-2 Portable EV Charger (16 Amp)
Product | Amp rating | Level | Cable Length | Nema | Power | Price |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
MEGEAR – Level 1-2 Portable EV Charger (16 Amp) | 16 Amp | Level 1 & Level 2 | 25 Feet (7.6 M) | NEMA 6-20 & NEMA 5-15 | 3.84 kW | Click for more info |
Because this is a Level 1 & 2 charge, you can plug it into a 120V outlet or a 240V and it will adjust. It is designed to be connected to either a NEMA 5-15 which is the most commonly found one in the US or a NEMA 6-20 outlet. This portable EV charger adapter has a 25ft long charging cable which is permanently connected to the charger and can’t be disconnected.
It is an SAE J1772 charger because most of the electric cars sold in the US either have J1772 or come with a J1772 adapter which is the case with Tesla cars. These specifically come with a J1772 to Tesla Adapter provided by the manufacturer.
Its maximum power output is 3.84 kW which means that you’ll be able to charge a standard Tesla Model 3 in 12 to 14 hours, a Model Y with the 75 kWh battery pack in about 20 hours or so and Hyundai Kona or the Kia Niro in about 17 hours. A 40 kWh Nissan Leaf should take about 10-11 hours. These are estimations from 0 to 100% and are just some rough approximations based on parameters, so don’t rely on them to be super accurate.
This is not a smart charger, usually at this kind of charging rate you won’t find any smart features like WiFi connectivity or smartphone integration. It doesn’t have an LCD display, it only uses 4 indicating lights. Each LED indicator light tells you if it is powered on, if it is charging or if there is a fault.
The unit is IP55 rated so it is waterproof and dustproof and it comes with a 1-Year Warranty.
BougeRV – Level 1 Portable EV Charger (16 Amp)
Product | Amp rating | Level | Cable Length | Nema | Power | Price |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
BougeRV – Level 1 Portable EV Charger (16 Amp) | 16 Amp | Level 1 & Level 2 | 25 Feet (7.6M) | NEMA 5 – 15 & NEMA 6 – 20 | 3.8 kW | Click for more info |
There are other similarities, because this one can also be plugged into either a NEMA 5-15 or a NEMA 6-20 standard outlet. It too can be plugged into a 120V AC or a 240V AC wall outlet and depending on that it will be a L1 or L2 charger.
It is fully compatible with J1772 plugs and the length of the charging cable is 25 feet (7.6 meters). As we mentioned before, you can charge your Tesla using the Tesla charging adapter. Because cables on the US car chargers are permanently fixed to the control box, you can’t replace them for a longer one, however you can easily find J1772 extension cords online.
If you already have some experience then the moment you’ll look at it you’ll tell that this electric vehicle charger uses the Duosida control box with the 4 LEDs. There is a lot of rebranding going on in the EV adapter and charger space. Interestingly, while trying to find more product information on the control box, the Duosida website points me to a Megear and a BougeRV product on Amazon, thus the confusion greatly increases. What we have consistently found is that the price is very similar with all the rebranded chargers (original price, not including potential discounts).
This control box tells you whether it is ready to charge, if it is delivering power to the vehicle or if a fault is discovered through 4 LED lights and that is it, no LCD screen, no smartphone app or WiFi connection. It is IP55 rated and comes with a 1-Year No-Hassle warranty.
Morec – Level 1-2 Portable EV Charger (15 Amp)
Product | Amp rating | Level | Cable Length | Nema | Power | Price |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Morec – Level 1-2 Portable EV Charger (15 Amp) | 15 Amp | Level 1 & Level 2 | 24 Feet (7.5 M) | NEMA 5-15 | 1.8 kW | Click for more info |
One important mention on this particular product is that even though it is marketed as a Level 1-2 device, it is basically a Level 1 charger, however we chose to keep the name in order to help you distinguish between the different chargers and know exactly which one we are referring to.
1.8 kW means that charging times are not as good, you can expect 30 hours to fully charge a standard Tesla Model 3 or 23 hours for a Nissan Leaf with the 40 kWh battery.
This J1772 EVSE charger has a cable which is 24ft long (About 7.5 meters) and the unit has a slightly better IP65 rating. Another difference is in the way the unit communicates information to you, instead of 4 LED lights it just uses 1 blinking light that will blink in different ways according to the charging status.
It has overcurrent, overvoltage, under voltage, overheating and leakage protection, so you should be nicely covered on the safety side and the device comes with a 1-Year warranty. It is the lightest adapter and plug here.
MEGEAR – Level 1 EV Charging Station (6-16 Amp)
Product | Amp rating | Level | Cable Length | Nema | Power | Price |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
MEGEAR – Level 1 EV Charging Station (6-16 Amp) | 6 – 16 Amp | Level 1 | 25 Feet (7.6 M) | NEMA 5-15 | 1.92 kW | Click for more info |
The charging times will be about the same as with the Morec so we won’t get into that anymore, what we do want to point out is that it is the only one with an LCD screen that offers you some critical information on the charging level, amperage, voltage, how hot the unit is getting, how much power has been delivered to the car and the ability to set a timer. This is done through the RFID Cards system that it has built-in.
The Megear comes with a control box that is IP66 rated and a 1-Year No-Hassle warranty together with the usual safety features like overcurrent, overvoltage and ground fault protection.
