Lectron – Level 2 Portable EV Charger (32 Amp) Charging specifications
If you want to buy a 32 Amp Lectron EV Charger, you have two options. You either get the portable charger or the charging station. We’ll explain the differences between the two here.
Both function at a 32A Amperage and both can achieve the same 7.8 kW charging rate. Now let’s find out how long it actually takes to charge your car: For example, the charging time for a standard Tesla Model 3, VW ID.3 Pure, VW ID.4 Pure and Renault Zoe is 6.5 hours. The Long Range Model 3 will charge in 9 hours. It takes 9.5 hours for the Model Y to charge and also for the VW ID.3 Pro and ID.4 Pro.
But what if you are the EV Owner of a Hyundai Kona or a Kia Niro? For both, it will take just 9 hours to charge, just like for a Mustang Mach E. So as you can see, in terms of charging speed, things are looking good because pretty much all of these electric cars and plug-in hybrids should be able to fully charge while you sleep.
Both the Portable Electric Charger and the EV Charging Station work at a 240V Voltage.
Lectron – Level 2 Portable EV Charger (32 Amp) Cable types and connectors
The station has a cable that is 21 feet long and the portable EVSE charger cable measures 20 feet (6 meters), so they’re almost the same in length.
Now in terms of what wall socket you plug them into, you need to know that the portable charger uses a NEMA 14-50 wall connector while the charging station can be plugged into either a NEMA 14-50 or a NEMA 6-50 socket.
Both use the same charge port for plugging into the car, the SAE J1772 connector. You’ll find that plug on any electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid in the US and if you don’t, it most likely comes with an adapter (Case in point: Tesla cars).
In both cases, the EV charging cable is tethered to the charger and cannot be disconnected. The advantage of the portable charger is that it can be carried around, while the wall charger will have to be mounted in your garage. Electric vehicle charging stations are a more elegant solution in general.
Lectron – Level 2 Portable EV Charger (32 Amp) Features
Neither of the versions of the 32-Amp charger have any kind of wireless connectivity, there is no smartphone app or Alexa integration meaning these are not smart chargers. Another feature that we would have liked to see at least is the scheduled charging feature which lets any EV owner take advantage of the lower price of off-peak electricity, thus reducing the effect that the charging cost has on their electric energy bill.
With prices now soaring, this kind of thing becomes more important in the total cost of ownership. The good part is that it is very likely your new EV comes with this feature built into the car’s dashboard or smartphone app.
Both chargers make use of an LCD display to show you the charging level, status, for how long the car has been charging and if there any faults. The portable model even has 2 buttons to adjust the amperage, from 32 Amps to 10 Amps.
The portable 32-amp charger comes with a 1-year warranty while the charging station comes with a 2-year warranty, it is good know that they have circuit breakers built inside them so that in case of overcurrent, they can automatically stop and not sustain any damage.
