MEGEAR – Level 1 Portable EV Charger (16 Amp) Charging specifications

The MEGEAR Level 1 Charger line-up consists of 3 models: The fixed 16 Amp Level 1 charger, the adjustable 16 Amp model and the Level 1 & 2 Charger which can adapt.

We’ll be looking at 4 distinct devices here:

  • The fixed 16 Amp MEGEAR Level 1 Charger: This device has a charging rate of 1.92 kW and works on a 110V wall socket. This allows it to charge a standard Tesla Model 3 in 29 hours, the same time applies to the VW ID.3 Pure, ID.4 Pure and Renault Zoe. To charge a Hyundai Kona or a Kia Niro you’ll need to wait 37 hours to get them to 100% and 44 hours for the Tesla Model Y which has a larger 75 kWh battery pack.
  • The adjustable 16 Amp MEGEAR Level 1 charger: This device can be adjusted to work at 6,8,10, 12 or 16 Amps however the charging times at peak power (16A) are the same as with the first because they both achieve a charging power of 1.92 kW.
  • The MEGEAR Level 1 & 2 16 Amp Charger: Now here things are different because this portable electric vehicle charger has a charging rate of up to 3.84 kW but that is when it is functioning on a 240V socket. Now when the charger works as a Level 1 device, the charging times are exactly like the first. But when it works as a Level 2 charger, it will charge your Tesla Model 3 in just 13 hours and the same applies to the ID.3 Pure, ID.4 Pure and Zoe. The Model Y will charge in just 19.5 hours and the Kia Niro or the Hyundai Kona will charge in just 17. The difference in charging time is quite big when you upgrade to a Level 2 charger.

MEGEAR – Level 1 Portable EV Charger (16 Amp) Cable types and connectors

The MEGEAR Level 1 Charger line-up has the same charging cable length of 25 feet (7.6 meters). That’s more than enough for most uses cases, whether your car is inside the garage or parked in front of it. The cable is fixed, you can’t disconnect it from the charger, however you can just buy an extension cord like this one.

All 3 chargers will plug into your car’s charge port via the J1772 connector, however when it comes to the wall connector, things are different for each. The fixed 16 Amp model and the adjustable will plug into a NEMA 5-15 socket, however the Level 1 & 2 charger will plug into either a NEMA 6-20 or a NEMA 5-15 socket.

MEGEAR – Level 1 Portable EV Charger (16 Amp) Features

The MEGEAR Level 1 chargers have not been equipped with any kind of connectivity, so you don’t get Alexa integration or a smartphone app.

But then there is a charging feature called “Scheduled charging” which can really help and is only available on the adjustable 16 Amp model. This helps you use off-peak electricity to lower the charging cost in time. Might not seem much but with electric energy prices going up it just might help you get all of the money you spent on the charger back. But don’t give up on the other two portable EVSE chargers just yet because you might not need this function to be in the charger if your new electric car has it built-in.

In terms of interaction with the charger, again the adjustable model wins because it has an LCD display while the other two do not. You can adjust the amperage and also set the charge timer.

There is another interesting thing about the adjustable Level 1 charger, that it is IP66 rated while the other two have an enclosure which is just IP55 rated. This allows it to better withstand water and dirt. The cable is also wear-resistant. All of the 3 devices come with a 1-Year No-Hassle warranty.
