Mustart – Level 2 Portable EV Charger (26 Amp) Charging specifications
The Mustart EV Charger (Or Mustard EV Charger as it is commonly reffered to by people on the internet) is a confusing line-up of several identical-looking chargers that we will explain here so that you can find the mustard flavor that fits your tastes.
We’ll be looking at 4 distinct devices here:
- 26 Amp Mustart EV Charger – This has a charging rate of 6.24 kW at a 240V voltage which in reality would charge a standard Tesla Model 3 in about 7.5 hours and the same would apply for a Volkswagen ID.3 Pure, ID.4 Pure and a Renault Zoe. If you are the EV owner of a Tesla Model Y, you’ll be interested to know that it should take about 10 hours more or less, because of the larger battery pack. A Kia Niro or a Hyundai Kona should charge in just about 10 hours.
- Mustart Travelmaster 32 Amp – It has adjustable amperage between 15 and 32 Amps with a charging power of 7.68kw. This one will get faster charging times, because the same standard Tesla Model 3 will now charge in just 6.5 hours while the Long Range one will take 9 and the Tesla Model Y will take 9.5 hours to reach 100% charge. The VW ID.3 Pure, ID.4 Pure and the Renault Zoe will be fully charged in just 6.5 hours. The Hyundai Kona and Kia Niro will now charge in 9 hours with the TravelMaster. If you want to charge a Mustang Mach E, it will take 9 hours.
- Mustart 40 Amp Adjustable Charger – This specific one has a charging rate of 8 kW meaning it will achieve more or less the same charging time as the 32 Amp, the advantage being that you can adjust the amperage here from 15 to 40 Amps.
- Mustart 40 Amp Charger (Non-Adjustable) – What this one lacks in adjustability, it makes up for in pure charging power with a rate of 9.60 kW. Now, some EVs can and some can’t take advantage of this rate. For example the standard Model 3, ID.3 Pure, ID.4 Pure and Renault Zoe will charge in the same amount of time as with the 7.68 kW charger, however the Tesla Model Y can use the full power of this charger and get to 100% in just 8 hours. A Mustang Mach E can charge its 70 kWh battery pack in just 7.5 hours.
Mustart – Level 2 Portable EV Charger (26 Amp) Cable types and connectors
All the Mustart EV Chargers in the product line-up use the same cable that is 25 feet long (7.6 Meters) and which is tethered to the charger itself. If you want to extend that cable, you can buy a J1772 extension cord like this one.
All of the 4 chargers use the J1772 connector to connect to your electric car’s charge port, this is the standard for North American EVs.
Then we get to the wall connector and here things are different for each version so we’ll list them here:
- The 26 Amp Mustart EV Charger plugs into a NEMA 10-30 wall socket.
- Mustart Travelmaster 32 Amp plugs into a NEMA 14-50 or NEMA 15-50 socket.
- Mustart 40 Amp Adjustable Charger uses a NEMA 14-50 socket.
- Mustart 40 Amp Charger (Non-Adjustable) can plug into a NEMA 14-50, 6-50 or 10-30 wall socket.
Mustart – Level 2 Portable EV Charger (26 Amp) Features
The Mustart EV Charger is not a smart charger because it doesn’t have any kind of connectivity in the form of WiFi or Bluetooth and thus cannot be remotely programmed. It lacks the key scheduled charging feature which would let you use off-peak electricity to charge your car and thus reduce the electric energy bill down to a degree. But most EVs that are sold nowadays should come with a charging timer, so you most likely are going to be able to get around that.
You do get an LCD display on either charger that you buy which shows you the charging level, power, amperage, voltage, how long the car has been charging and how many kWh have been used.
All of these devices are portable electric vehicle chargers, so you don’t need to have the wall charger installed, you can just keep it in your car and use it wherever you go.
In terms of the casing, you don’t need to worry because the newer models are IP65 rated (The old housing was IP55 rated) so they’re going to be waterproof as well as dustproof. Each of these Mustart EV Chargers also comes a 2-Year No-Hassle warranty, a full year more than what you would get in this charger’s price range.
