SplitVolt – Level 2 Portable EV Charger (40 Amp) Charging specifications
The SplitVolt Level 2 charger comes in 2 versions: A 24-Amp and a 40 Amp version. Here we’ll focus more on the 40-Amp but we always keep them in comparison. So this is a portable electric vehicle charger, which means you don’t need to mount it on a wall, you can carry it around with you.
SplitVolt do sell a special wall socket that is easy to mount and in which you can plug in your EV.
But now let’s look at what matters most for the EV owner and that is power. Does it have fast charging speeds? The answer is a clear yes, because the 40 Amp model has a power of 9.6 kW while the 24-Amp model has 6.6 kW of power.
And so what do these numbers mean? Well the 6.6 kW charger will provide 22 miles of range per hour to a Nissan LEAF or LEAF Plus.
But let’s look at the bigger charger, the one that can output 9.6 kW because here, things get really good: A standard Model 3 will charge in just 6.5 hours, so will the VW ID.4 Pure, ID.3 Pure and the Renault Zoe, while a Tesla Model Y will take 8 hours to charge given its larger battery pack. A Hyundai Kona and a Kia Niro will both take about 9 hours.
It is worth noting that both chargers operate at a 240V Voltage.

IT doesn’t matter which version you buy, they both will have an EV Charging cable length of 16.4 feet which equivalates to about 4.9 meters and the cable is obviously tethered to the charger, you can’t just disconnect it and replace it with another one. Now at this point it is worth noting and pointing out the fact that the cable is a bit short, because in this price range you’ll find electric car chargers that span up to 25 feet, so you don’t always have to park very close to the wall charger in your garage to charge your car.

Neither SplitVolt EV Chargers have any kind of connectivity like WiFi or Bluetooth, there is no smartphone app to track your charging and have some extra data. They also lack in charging features because there’s no scheduled charging (or timer as it is sometimes called).
This is a useful function that helps you avoid high charging costs by making use of the off-peak electricity. Given the recent economic developments, electric energy is poised to be more expensive in the coming years as demand grows.
