EV Gear – Level 2 Portable EV Charger (40 Amp) Charging specifications
The EV Gear Level 2 Charger is a powerful one, this is a device that doesn’t joke around. First of all it can charge at 40 Amps, which is better than what most chargers in its price range can do because at this level you usually settle for 32.
This is an electric vehicle charging station for your home, not a portable charger. Once you have the wall charger installed, it will charge your car at a 240V voltage with a charging rate of 9.7Kw. But those are just numbers, what does that mean in reality? This means a standard Tesla Model 3 will charge in just 6.5 hours and a model Y in just 8 hours. If you own a 64 kWH Kona it will take just 9 hours to get to 100% and a 30 kWH Nissan Leaf will take a staggeringly 4.5 hours (EV Gear states that it can charge it in just 3.5 hours). Also good to know a 50 kwH VW ID.4 will charge in 6.5 hours and the same goes for the 45 kWH VW ID.3 together with the 52 kWH Renault Zoe. For a Kia Niro you should expect 9 hours to get a full charge. EV Gear also posted some numbers: 2.5 hours for a Toyota Prius Prime, the same 2.5 hours for the Chevy Volt Plug-In Hybrid and 4.5 hours for the Honda Clarity EV.
So all of these charging times are great because you can get a full charge by the time you wake up in the morning and your electric car is good to go.
EV Gear – Level 2 Portable EV Charger (40 Amp) Cable types and connectors
This home charger is tethered which means the EV charging cable itself is permanently tied to the charger, you can’t simply disconnect it and replace it with another. The cable length spans up to 25 feet (7.6 Meters) which should be enough even if your EV Charger is in a garage and your car is parked outside of it.
The wall connector that plugs into your wall socket is NEMA 14-50 (There is also a 6-50 version but it is not available on Amazon nor on EV Gear’s shop at the time of writing) and at the other end of the cable, the part that plugs into your electric vehicle is an SAE J1772 connector which is compatible with all the Electric cars that are made in North America.

This particular electric vehicle charger doesn’t have any kind of connectivity or advanced charging features, so you won’t be able to link it to your smartphone and monitor it and it does really bad on this part because you can’t monitor the charging level, status or faults.
There is no Alexa or Google Home integration, nor does it have Scheduled Charging, but at least for the latter function it is highly probable that the EV owner can set it up directly from the Electric Vehicle. We highly encourage this as you can use off-peak electricity which is usually available late into the night and you can reduce the charging cost.
The charger is IP66 rated so you can drag it through water and mud and it will still work, do your best to keep it intact though. EV Gear offers you a 3-Year-No-Hassle warranty on it.
In the package, along with the charging station you’ll also get hang tab to mount it on the wall, a clip dock, wall mount and a holster for the J1772 connector. The entire charging station is a bit on the heavier side at 16.42 lbs (7.4kg) however since it is mounted on the wall, this won’t really matter.
