PerfectPrime IR0006 – Specs & Review

This thermal imaging device is the slim version with an ergonomic design of the PerfectPrime thermal cameras line-up. It should actually be the Perfectprime ir0006 pocket camera because that would make the line-up much more easily marketable instead of the product codes.

The IR0006 thermal Imager comes with micro USB connectivity for downloading the captured infrared images. The IR camera captures the digital files in JPG format.

On the front of the device there is the USB port on the left side and the special buttons, one for capturing an image and up/down and menu keys.

On the back it has a visible light camera backed up by an LED lighting lamp and the IR sensor and it works by using image processing to blend the images from the two modules. Now because the two cameras are in 2 different spots, there is an option to calibrate the image registration in the menu so that they align perfectly.

The camera itself is really easy to use and intuitive, you don’t even need the quick start guide or user manual.

You can switch between a few color palettes like Spectra, Iron, Cool, White and black. Just like on a digital camera, you can view the captured infrared images, scroll through them and delete them if need be.

There is a setting to change the fusion mode, you can choose the way in which thermal and visual images blend together. Available options are 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%.

When you turn on the camera, it will show you the central point temperature in the top left corner, the emissivity and 3 temperature cursors: One is to point out the hot point, one for the cold point, these are dynamic obviously. And then there is the central point temperature cursor which is fixed. On the right there is a color scale to better illustrate the hot and cold spectrum.

PerfectPrime IR0006 – Thermal imaging quality

The infrared IR resolution of this handheld thermal imaging camera is 320 x 240 pixels which adds up to 76,800 pixels, almost 4 times the thermal resolution that you get on the average IR thermal camera at this price range. This not only exceeds the benchmark, it obliterates it.

The visual camera adds another level of depth and detail to the final image and although it isn’t as advanced as the MSX technology you would find on a Flir One Pro or a Seek Thermal camera, it does make a difference.

It also has the right refresh rate which is 9Hz and at this price you should not settle for anything less than this frame rate. There is no manual focus mode though.

PerfectPrime IR0006 – Temperature Range, Accuracy

The thermal sensitivity is close to what you would expect from infrared cameras in this class at 0.07 degrees Celsius.

The temperature range is also very good especially on the low end of the thermal scope with the device being able to detect temperature changes even down to -20 degrees Celsius.

The temperature measurement accuracy is not bad, with a +/- 2 degrees accuracy but it could be better. The viewing angle is also the standard 27 x 35. It also has a spectral range of 8~14 nanometers.

PerfectPrime IR0006 – Battery life & Memory

You get the device with a 3GB internal storage in the form of an internal SD card. PerfectPrime offers you a 24 month standard warranty and after you do the product registration process you get an additional 12 months.

It has a built-in rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery and you charge it via the USB cable. I tried to find the exact capacity but PerfectPrime doesn’t specify this in the data sheets. It is not waterproof so be careful where you use it, especially in plumbing applications where there might be water involved at any point. It is also not dustproof.

So where can you use this kind of device? Electrical inspections are a great application in which you will be able to take advantage of the high-resolution to better pinpoint the exact spots where electric cables run. Of course this also applies to home inspections.

The LCD screen is huge, it has a 3.2″ LCD and that’s almost as big as the one you used to get on smartphones 10 years ago. Compared to the average 2.8″ you would expect from a thermal image camera, it is a welcome advantage.

What we really like is that the manufacturer offers you a 60-day money-back guarantee in addition to the 2-year limited warranty that you get. If you do the product registration process you get an extra 12 months.

Along with the IR006, PerfectPrime also builds night vision monoculars like the IR0320.
