First of all we need to get something cleared up: 220V, 230V and 240V refer to the same system. There is no difference in reality. So a 220V charger will work in the same outlet and on the same system as a 240V charger.

When it comes to a 240V charger for your home, there’s no match for the ChargePoint Home Flex, probably one of the most successful home charging stations ever sold.

It works at a 240V voltage and that’s because this is a Level 2 charger. You can plug it into a NEMA 14-50 or 6-50 outlet and it will deliver up to 12 kW of power, however in order to access its full potential and get the most miles of range per hour of charge, you’ll need to hardwire it to a 60-Amp circuit breaker rather than just plugging it in because of the 20% rule (To get it to work at 48 Amps).

At the end other end you’ll find a charging cable that is 23ft. long and uses an SAE J1772 connector which will plug into all EVs including the Tesla Models through the use of the adapter that you get when you buy the car.

It comes with smart features such as WiFi connectivity which will allow you to connect to it via the ChargePoint app and remote control it, get real-time data on the charging process including voltage and amperage but also get notified for example if you forgot to plug in your EV. Through the use of Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant you can even ask it how much have you spent on charging your EV this month.

The ChargePoint Home Flex electric vehicle charging station is NEMA 3R rated so it is not exactly the toughest charger, this is one that you install indoors. A NEMA 3R rating is the equivalent of IP14. However it does come with a 3-Year warranty and 24/7 Customer support. We also like the backlit connector holster which also works as a status light because it will light up in different colors depending on the charger status.

Now we’ll look at our next 240V EV Charging Station and that is the Grizzl-E Classic, a 240V Level 2 Charging Station. Now this cannot produce 50 kW as the previous device and instead it can go up to 40 Amps. Coincidentally or not, 40 Amps is as much as you will get from plugging it into a 14-50 or a 6-50 outlet. When running at 40 Amps, this charger can produce up to 9.6 kW of power. According to the specifications, this Grizzl-E will function at a voltage between 208 volts and 240 volts.

It comes with a tethered charging cable that measures 24 feet and uses a J1772 connector to plug into the car’s charge port. Now the Grizzl-E Classic doesn’t come with any smart features, however there is the Grizzl-E Smart version but that has proved to be a mixed bunch and the reason why is that the manufacturer’s intention was to make it OCPP compliant which it did.

This means you can use any kind of smartphone app that uses that protocol to connect to it, which is great. But the app that comes with the charger and is usually the most important one lacks behind all of the others here by a big margin. That app needs some serious work done to it in terms of design and functionality.

But on the outside, the Grizzl-E just excels. The design of the unit is great but it is also IP67 rated which means that it is the toughest charger on our list. It is waterproof up to the point that it can be immersed in water and it will still work afterwards. This charger is suitable for indoor or outdoor installation. It is also UL listed and the Grizzl-E backs all of this up with a 3-Year warranty.

If it is 220V & 240V Electric Vehicle Chargers we’re talking about, we can’t exclude the Wallbox Pulsar Plus. This comes in two versions, this one with a 40 Amp output that can be plugged into a NEMA 14-50 240V outlet and the 48 Amp version which can’t be plugged into any kind of wall outlet and instead needs to be hardwired. Just like the ChargePoint, if you want to take advantage of its full potential you’ll need to hook it up to a 60-Amp circuit breaker in you home’s electrical circuit.

Unlike the Grizzl-E, this has plenty of smart features. The first two we want to review is the power sharing feature which lets you connect two of these 240V chargers to the same circuit and they’ll communicate with each other and balance their power usage so that they don’t blow the fuse on the electrical panel. The other one is the solar excess feature which can have this home charger only draw power when the solar panels on your roof are generating it. You can also set a ratio of grid to solar energy usage.

Along with these, there’s your usual WiFi but also unusual Bluetooth connectivity, a welcome bonus. There’s a smartphone app which allows you to schedule charging times so that you use as much off-peak electricity as possible but also detailed reporting on previous charging sessions showing you how much energy you’ve consumed and paid for. You can remotely start or stop this electric car charging station and get real-time data on the voltage, amperage, charging rate and status.

This Wallbox comes with a 3-Year warranty and its outer case is IP54 rated which makes it tougher than the ChargePoint but certainly not as waterproof as the Grizzl-E is.

The last 240-volt Electric Vehicle Charger we’ll be looking at today is the Enel X JuiceBox. This too comes in 2 versions, a 32-Amp and a 40-Amp. Now both of these will plug into the same 240-volt outlet, more specifically a NEMA 14-50. That type of household outlet is powerful enough to max out both chargers. At full power it can deliver 10 kW which puts it in the same class as the Wallbox in terms of charging speeds.

The JuiceBox has a cable length of 25 ft. and its charging cable with a J1772 connector and the device has all the smart features one would want. This is a wifi enabled charger and you can connect to it with your smartphone through the Juicenet app. In terms of features it is business as usual, there’s a scheduled charging feature, reports and reminders. It does have a little extra feature that keeps track of the amount of CO2 that you’ve saved ever since you started using the charger.

The JuiceBox is NEMA 4X rated (IP66 equivalent) so you can expect it to be really tough in terms of the ability to withstand water, dust and dirt. It is also covered by a 3-Year warranty.
