We’ll start with one of our all time favorites and one which for good reasons we consider to be one of the best portable EV Chargers, the Mustart Level 2 charger (26 Amp).

This EV charger can be plugged into either a NEMA 10-30 or a NEMA 14-30 outlet and can deliver 26 Amps of electrical current at a 240V voltage. It has a charging rate of 6.24 kW, which means that a Tesla Model 3 should take about 7 to 8 hours to fully charge according to our estimations. A 60 kWh Chevy Bolt should fully charge in about 9-10 hours and a Nissan Leaf with the 40 kWh EV battery pack should fully charge in about 7 hours.

So this home EV charger definitely adds plenty of miles of range to your electric car overnight. It has a 25ft cable (7.6 meters) that uses an SAE J1772 connector. This type of connector is universal and compatible with all EVs in North America with the exception of Tesla models but which come with an adapter, so you will be just fine. The cable should be long enough for most situations, however if you believe it is too short, you can buy an extension cord.

Now this is not a smart charger so you won’t find any wifi connectivity or smartphone integration and at this point it is essential to understand that portable chargers on the market right now are not smart chargers. If you want smart features like on the wifi enabled Chargepoint home flex electric vehicle charger, then you will have to buy a home charge station that you mount on the wall.

However, this particular one at least does come with an LCD display that will show you essential info like the current power, voltage, charging level, amperage and how many kWh have been delivered to the electrical vehicle in this current session.

The control box is IP65 rated for being waterproof and dustproof and the unit comes with a 2-Year No-Hassle warranty.

One of the best portable EV Chargers in the world is the BougeRV Level 2, 32 Amp charger. This one uses a Duosida control box, it can be plugged into a NEMA 14-50 outlet and is capable of delivering 32 Amps of electrical current at a 240 Voltage. This means that it will output up to 7.68 kW of power and so the standard Tesla Model 3 should be able to charge in about 7 hours. A Mustang Mach-E with the 50 kWh battery pack would take about 9 hours to charge.

There’s a small LCD display on the unit that will display the charging rate, voltage, amperage, the charging level and how many kWh have been provided to the car in the current session. There are also 2 buttons to toggle between different amp settings. Along with these, there are 4 LED indicating lights that tell you the charging status, if it is charging the car or if there is a fault.

The cable is also 25 feet long and can be connected to the car’s J1772 plug. The control box has an IP67 rating so it can withstand large amounts of water and dirt. BougeRV will provide a 1-Year No-Hassle warranty for the unit.

Another one of the best portable EV Chargers on our list is the Megear Level 1-2 SkySword 16-Amp charger. It can deliver 16 Amps of electrical current at a charge speed of 3.84 kW. Now because this charger can only deliver 16 Amps, the charging time will be longer, so for example the standard Tesla Model 3 will now charge in abou 13 hours, so you do have to wait a considerably longer amount of time.

Things are very similar here, there is a 25ft long J1772 cable and a control box with a great design, but which doesn’t have an LCD screen, it just has the standard 4 indicating lights. The control box is only IP55 rated so while it is waterproof it is not going to be as tough as the previous models we listed here.

It comes with all the standard safety features like overcurrent protection, overvoltage protection, leakage protection and ground fault protection.

This is a simple no nonsense charger that is compatible with the more common outlets like the 5-15 at a low price point.

Our 4th unit on our best portable EV Charger list is the Lectron Level 2 portable charger. This one uses the most common Duosida control box on the market. This form factor has probably been the most successful one on the portable charger market.

It can be plugged into either a NEMA 10-30 or a NEMA 6-20 outlet running at a 240V voltage and can output 3.86 kW of power, meaning the charging time will be the same as with the previous Megear SkySword charger.

This J1772 electric vehicle ev charger has a slightly shorter cable that only measures 21 feet (6.4 meters) but this could still be more than enough, it just depends on how far the outlet in your garage is from the car.

One of the reasons that all these portable EV charging stations lack is the ability to set a charging schedule. The reason why that function is important is because you can setup the charger to only charge between certain hours and thus reduce the charging cost by using more off-peak electricity at night and avoid peak prices. However, there is good news because most EVs that are produced today have this feature built-in.

This particular portable electric car charger is the lightest of all the models here because it only weighs 6.98 pounds (3.1 kg), the control box is IP55 rated and it comes with a 1-Year warranty.

As a bonus on this list, we added what we believe is the best portable EV charger in the world. Why is that? Simple, because it is the fastest. This unit is as fast as the expensive smart electric vehicle chargers mounted on the wall, but in a small portable package.

You plug it into a NEMA 14-50 or a 6-50 wall outlet and it will deliver 9.6 kW of charging power at a 240V voltage. It is almost 3 times faster than a 16 Amp charger.

It allows you to adjust the amperage and also has a charge timer, a function that is the trimmed down version of charge scheduling. Basically you can set a timer delay so that it starts charging at a certain hour that is convenient for you.

In terms of form factor, it is basically the same enclosure as the one used by the 26-Amp version with the LCD display and 25ft cable. The control box is IP65 rated and the product comes with a 2-Year No-Hassle warranty.
